Biography
1958–2019
Aunque nació en la Ciudad de México el 10 de diciembre de 1958, radicó en la ciudad de Querétaro desde muy temprana edad, Gerardo Esquivel es considerado un gran artista queretano por ser esta última el lugar donde se ha desarrollado personal, artística y profesionalmente.
Fue alumno de dibujo y técnicas pictóricas del Mtro. Jesús Rodríguez de la Vega en el Instituto de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro. Más tarde, fue miembro y co-fundador del Taller de Serigrafía de la Casa de Cultura Dr. Ignacio Mena de Querétaro (1978-1982). Allí abordó diversas técnicas y procedimientos de impresión, y desarrolló diversas formas de experimentación gráfica y plástica, investigación de taller, trabajo docente e interdisciplinario, difusión y exhibición. Entre 1992 y 2000 produjo más de 500 diseños, y fue en este periodo que el Patronato de las Fiestas de Querétaro lo comisionó para realizar obras con absoluta libertad creativa.
Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en galerías, museos, espacios públicos y privados a nivel nacional e internacional, en países como Holanda, España, Inglaterra y Francia. Gerardo Esquivel publicó tres libros sobre su obra: A Sangre y Fuego (2012), libro que ahora es parte de colecciones en bibliotecas internacionales como Yale, Columbia, NYU, Chicago y Berlín; Agonía moderna y Arte (2015), y Squatters (2017), dejando inconclusos muchos otros.
Entre sus premios y distinciones sobresalen: Reconocimiento Especial en el Premio Querétaro en Artes (1987), Beca Emérita en Artes Plásticas (1991) CONECULTA Qro., Beca de Coinversión (1994) FONCA, Beca de Coinversión (2001) CONECULTA Qro., Premio Emérito a la Creación y Trayectoria Artística (2012) IQCA, y Medalla “Germán Patiño Díaz” (2013) otorgada por el Municipio de Querétaro.
Gerardo fue un artista entre la modernidad y lo contemporáneo. Continuó su trabajo dialogando entre pinceles, brochas, raseros y mallas; experimentando con emulsiones y tintas; ensamblando objetos; atacando el lienzo y el papel entre un choque de formas y conceptos; hasta el final de sus días, el 26 de abril de 2019.
1958–2019
Even though he was born in Mexico City on December 10th, 1958, he moved to the city of Queretaro from an early age. Because the latter was the place where he developed personally, professionally, and artistically; nowadays he is considered one of its greatest artists.
He studied pictorial techniques at the Institute of Fines Arts of the Autonomous University of Queretaro, where was a student of the renowned Jesus Rodriguez de la Vega. Later, he was a member and co-founder of the Serigraphy Workshop in the Culture Centre Dr. Ignacio Mena (1978–1982). There, he explored and approached various screen printing techniques and developed various forms of graphic and plastic experimentation, workshop research; as well as teaching, collaborating in interdisciplinary work, dissemination, and exhibition. Between 1992 and 2000, he created more than 500 screenprinting works, and also during this period the Queretaro's Festivities Board commissioned him to create, with absolute creative freedom, the artistic works that are part of the city's popular festivities.
His work has been presented in Mexico and abroad (mainly the Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom, and France) in private and public galleries, museums, different cultural spaces, libraries, and educational and governmental institutions. Esquivel wrote three books about his work. A Sangre y Fuego (By Blood and Fire) (2012), which now is part of the collection of libraries in Berlin, Yale, Columbia, NYU, and Chicago; Agonía Moderna y Arte (Art and Modern Agony) (2015); and Squatters (Squatters) (2017); leaving many others unfinished.
He received several distinctions and awards for his artistic work, including Queretaro's Art Prize Special Recognition (1987), Emeritus Scholarship in Plastic Arts (1991), CONECULTA Co-investment Scholarship (1994), FONCA Co-investment Scholarship (2001), Creation and Artistic Career Emeritus Award (2012), and the Medal "German Patiño Díaz" (2013) awarded by the City of Querétaro.
Gerardo was an artist between modernity and the contemporary. He continued his work dialoguing between pencils, brushes, and meshes; experimenting with emulsions and inks; assembling objects; attacking the canvas and the paper between a clash of forms and concepts; until the end of his days in April 26, 2019.
